Living cheaply is not something a lot of folks want to think about. The economy is forcing those same people to watch money carefully in 2009.  That is a good thing if you make living cheaply a lifelong habit. . . not a good thing if you revert to old habits when things get better. . . and they will get better, right? Most people think  cutting back means eliminating fun. . . not so. Here is what we did yesterday evening that shows how living cheaply is for us fun. . . and always been  a way of life. A mindset for good times. . . and bad.  We and another couple went to see the Diamondbacks play last night. If you are not a sports fan, that’s major league baseball. We all had free tickets, inside the lines.  How were they free? My hawkeyed bride noticed a sign in the grocery store, 2 free tickets if you buy 2 cases of beer. So we and our friends being beer drinkers bought what we buy anyway. $13. 99 for Bud in bottles is a good price besides.  Instead of paying $5. 00 for a hot dog at the park, we stopped at our favorite sandwich shop. . . with coupons of course. Buy one get one free, both couples ate for the price of one ballpark hot dog. . . better for us as well, no indigestion.  You can bring bottled water into the game. Since it was 107 (hey, its Phoenix in July) at game time, we brought in 8 bottles. . . cost for 8 bottles around $1. 50. . . they are $3. 00 for one at the park.  Earlier yesterday we had bought 5 lbs of peanuts for $5. 00. . . with a coupon. . . and took a pound or so with us. We nibbled all game, with some left over.  When all is said and done we had a great evening, spent less than $10. 00 a couple including food, snacks, drinks, parking and gas. Remember the tickets were free for a purchase we would make anyway.  So we were living cheaply surrounded by other fans who paid for their tickets (the face value of ours was $30. 00) buying peanuts $4. 00 a bag for 30 peanuts, washed down with beer that cost up to $10. 00 a cup.  I will assure you we had a much better time than they did. The D’Back’s won.  That was nice for all. But by living cheaply we had the assurance we were not wasting money.

Homage to American musicals of the 1920s, The Drowsy Chaperone is the second successful musical from Canada on Broadway – after Baker Street, and the first in 25 years. There have been three other musicals from Canada on the stages of Broadway – Rockabye Hamlet, Billy Bishop Goes to War, Anne of Green Gables – but none made past a two-week run, and so are not considered Broadway productions. Created as a skit for a stag party, it metamorphosed into a great musical on its way to Broadway, via Toronto and Los Angeles. It is one of those musicals, not based on a book, play or movie, which became great.

The Drowsy Chaperone previewed on April 3, 2006 at the Marquis Theater, and after 32 previews, opened on May 1, 2006. By November 19, 2006, it has had 232 well-acclaimed performances. This Casey Nicholaw directed and choreographed musical was nominated for 13 Tony awards, and won five, for: Book of a Musical, Score (Music and/or Lyrics), Actress (Featured Role – Musical), Scenic Design (Musical), and Costume Design (Musical). In addition, it is the winner of seven 2006 Drama Desk Awards, and four Outer Circle Critics Awards 2006.

The Profile

Dubbed as ‘a musical within a comedy,’ The Drowsy Chaperone has, as a host and a guide, a character that goes by the name Man in Chair. It is a story of a Broadway starlet – played by Sutton Foster, who wants to give it all up for marriage, and her producer (played by Lenny Wolpe) who goes about trying to sabotage the marriage. Then, there is the chaperone, a martini-swigging vamp played by Beth Leavel.

With the debonair groom, the ditzy chorine, the Latin lover and a couple of gangsters in the mix, The Drowsy Chaperone gives the audiences pure pleasure. This well written musical, with wonderful songs and music, had many raving about it by the time they left the theater. Many in Baltimore would agree that Arthus B Modell did the city a great favor by moving what was then a differently named team in Cleveland and bringing it to Baltimore. The name ‘The Baltimore Ravens’ was not merely a whim of its owner but a tacit acknowledgement that the team was making a clean break from its old roots and beginning life afresh. The fact that the famous poet Edgar Allen Poe is buried in Baltimore and that the poet wrote a famous poem – “Ravens” is of course a great reason too. The new name was selected by a popular vote and since the locals had a big say in the name, was it any surprise that they rooted for the team too?
Art Modell moved the team from Cleveland due to several reasons. The stadium there was too small and even more importantly, he was losing money on a daily basis. Moving a team away from its home base was no mean task and resulted in a lot of legal work. Finally, the settlement ensured that the history and the scores of the erstwhile Cleveland Browns would be left behind and the Ravens would begin life afresh in Baltimore.
In that sense, the Ravens’ history is not many years old. But to old followers of the game, the Ravens date back considerably from 1996 – the year they began to play in Baltimore. The Cleveland Browns were resurrected in 1999 as the original team. But we know better now.
In the year 2003, the original owner, Art Modell, sold the rights to the Baltimore Ravens to another entrepreneur in Baltimore, Steve Bisciotti, in two separate transactions. Art retains an office in the Stadium and continues to be a consultant to the team. The team, meanwhile, lost some ground in the next season and some key members of the coaching team had to be replaced. However, the slump was soon rectified and the team got back to its winning ways.
The Baltimore Ravens have faced other legal issues besides the ones described earlier. Its original logo was disputed by Fred Bouchat who claimed a copyright. The claim was upheld by a jury and the Ravens had to change their logo. Losing the logo does not seem to have hurt the team commercially or professionally. No damages were awarded for the copy right infringement and the level of game was also unaffected. The team just continued its winning streak regardless of the logo they played under.
